In Memory of Michael Dawkins 1946-2023
Michael would be the first to describe himself as a “ski bum.” From his first years at Mt. Ashland and Shasta, to Sunriver and Aspen, and back to Buck Prairie and Hyatt Lake, he evolved from an alpine to Telemark to a classic and skate Nordic skier. Along the way he developed a passion for helping others to get out and enjoy the outdoors through his beginner to advanced ski lessons. He encouraged his “students” to help teach–in the words of the Roman Philosopher, Seneca, “when we teach, we learn.”
His goal was to elevate and grow the sport of Nordic skiing. A longtime Southern Oregon Nordic Club (SONC) board member, he presented entertaining mini ski lessons at club meetings, offered free Nordic ski lessons and led ski tours throughout the season, connected as a liaison with the USFS, BLM, local trail groups and clubs, and was an integral member of the team of early morning trail groomers. He was particular about grooming trials prior to ski lessons and tours and for the Ashland High School ski team. Overall, he wanted to create the best conditions for all skiers to have a good experience actually gliding rather than walking on skis. He personally enjoyed fast and fierce classic and skate skiing freshly groomed trails and wanted others to share the experience.
In 2019 Michael was honored with the Oregon Nordic Club John Day statewide service award for his tireless contributions to SONC and the sport of XC skiing.
“Bend zee kneez, five dollars pleez!”
